Condition Guide — Pregnancy Care
Chiropractic Care Built Around Every Trimester
Pregnancy reshapes how your spine and pelvis carry load, week by week. Care that ignores that timeline doesn’t fit — ours is built around whatever trimester you’re in.

01 — The Brief Answer
What’s actually changing in your body
One of the most common questions we hear from expecting moms is, “Is it safe to receive care during pregnancy?” In most uncomplicated pregnancies, chiropractic care, physical therapy, massage therapy, and acupuncture can all be safely adapted to meet the changing needs of your body throughout pregnancy.
Pregnancy brings significant changes to your posture, weight distribution, joints, muscles, and ligaments. Hormonal changes—including increased relaxin—help prepare your body for pregnancy and delivery, while your growing belly changes your center of gravity and places different demands on the spine and pelvis. Together, these changes can contribute to new aches and discomfort or aggravate previous injuries.
Common symptoms we help pregnant patients with
- Low back and pelvic pain
- SI joint pain
- Hip and glute pain
- Sciatica
- Pubic symphysis discomfort
- Round ligament and muscular discomfort
- Rib and mid-back pain
- Neck and shoulder tension
- Headaches
- Difficulty getting comfortable during sleep or daily activities
Symptoms often shift week to week as your body continues to adapt, so what helped in month four may need adjusting by month seven.
Why it’s not “just” pregnancy pain
Previous low back or hip injuries and prior pregnancies can also influence how your body responds to these changes. As your baby grows, their position and the increasing demands on your abdomen and pelvis may contribute to additional pressure, muscle tension, and discomfort. Ligament laxity and a shifting center of gravity change how force moves through your joints — meaning pain during pregnancy has real mechanical drivers, not something to simply wait out. Identifying which joints are compensating is most of what the exam below is for.
02 — Evaluation
How we adapt the exam to your stage
Every step is adapted to your trimester, comfort, and any activity guidance from your OB or midwife.
History
We start by listening. We’ll discuss your due date and trimester, current symptoms, previous pregnancies or injuries, activity level, and any concerns from your prenatal care team. We also screen for symptoms that may require evaluation by your OB, midwife, primary care provider, or another specialist before beginning treatment.
Examination
Our examination takes a closer look at how your body is moving and where limitations may be contributing to your pain — assessing your range of motion, posture, movement patterns, and areas of muscle tension or restriction.
Joint and motion palpation are used to evaluate how well the spine, pelvis, hips, and SI joints are moving, and to identify areas of restriction, tenderness, or altered mechanics. As your pregnancy progresses, positioning and examination techniques are adjusted so you remain comfortable throughout your visit.
Orthopedic & neuro testing
Gentle, modified SI joint and pelvic testing suited to each trimester, checking for the joint restrictions most likely to be driving your symptoms.
How imaging is handled
Imaging is avoided during pregnancy whenever possible. Conservative, trimester-appropriate care is the standard starting point, and we coordinate directly with your OB or midwife throughout your pregnancy.
Your examination helps us determine what your body needs — and whether chiropractic care, physical therapy, acupuncture, massage therapy, or a combination of services is the best fit for you.
03 — Treatment Options
Comfortable Care as Your Body Changes
As your belly grows, we adapt your care to keep you comfortable at every stage of pregnancy. Our office is equipped with pregnancy-friendly treatment tables with abdominal cut-outs and drop-away sections, along with supportive pregnancy pillows that provide additional room for your growing belly. These pregnancy-friendly amenities are available in our massage therapy rooms as well, allowing expecting moms to comfortably enjoy prenatal massage without putting unnecessary pressure on the abdomen.
Your chiropractic technique can also change throughout your pregnancy. When your belly becomes too large to comfortably receive traditional manual adjustments, we can modify your positioning or use gentle, low-force techniques such as the Activator Method. Whether you’re receiving chiropractic care, physical therapy, acupuncture, or prenatal massage, we adapt your positioning, treatment techniques, and supportive equipment to your stage of pregnancy and individual comfort.
Not every ache during pregnancy calls for every therapy below. Your plan is built around your trimester and any activity clearance you have from your OB.
03 — Treatment Options
Care Built Around Your Trimester
Not every case of neck pain calls for every therapy below. Posture-driven tension, a facet joint issue, and a disc-related case are treated differently, even though they can all feel similar at first.
Chiropractic adjustment
Gentle, pregnancy-appropriate adjustments to address joint restrictions, improve mobility, and relieve discomfort in the low back, pelvis, hips, ribs, and other areas as your body changes.
Physical therapy & home exercise
Individualized care focused on mobility, strength, stability, and movement during pregnancy, with progressive rehabilitation to help you safely rebuild strength and function postpartum.
Webster technique
A specific chiropractic approach focused on pelvic balance and function during pregnancy. Some patients use it hoping to support optimal fetal positioning, though it isn’t a guaranteed method for that — we’re upfront about what the evidence does and doesn’t show.
Prenatal Massage
Pregnancy-adapted massage to relieve muscle tension and discomfort in the low back, hips, shoulders, and other areas. Pregnancy pillows and belly-friendly table options help keep you comfortable as your body changes.
Acupuncture
Individualized acupuncture may be incorporated during pregnancy to help manage pain, muscle tension, headaches, nausea, and other pregnancy-related symptoms when appropriate.
Home & self-care
Personalized exercises, stretches, positioning recommendations, and activity guidance to support your changing body during pregnancy and help you continue progressing between visits.
Pelvic floor & core rehabilitation
Assessment and rehabilitation of the core and pelvic floor during pregnancy, including core weakness, pelvic stability, and preparing for a safe return to exercise and daily activities after delivery.
Questions We Often Hear
For most pregnancies, yes — we use pregnancy-safe techniques and positioning throughout, and we coordinate with your OB or midwife, especially if you have any pregnancy complications.
It’s a specific chiropractic approach focused on pelvic balance and function during pregnancy. It’s not a guaranteed method for fetal positioning, but many patients use it as part of their prenatal care.
Some patients find that maintaining pelvic balance and mobility throughout pregnancy is helpful, though we can’t promise specific labor outcomes — we’ll be honest with you about what the evidence does and doesn’t show.
For most uncomplicated pregnancies, yes, right up until delivery. We continually adapt technique and positioning as you progress, and we’ll flag anything that should be discussed with your OB first.
Yes — we’re glad to communicate with your prenatal care team, and we’ll always defer to them for anything outside musculoskeletal care.
Many patients start as soon as discomfort begins, but there’s no requirement to wait for pain — some come in early in pregnancy simply to stay ahead of the postural changes to come.
