01 — The Basics

What a DOT physical covers

A DOT physical confirms you’re medically qualified to operate a commercial motor vehicle. It covers vision, hearing, blood pressure, urinalysis, and a general physical exam, performed by a certified medical examiner listed on the National Registry.

How does it work?

A straightforward, efficient exam covering vision, hearing, blood pressure, urinalysis, and a general physical assessment — most exams are completed same-day.

Who’s it for?

CDL drivers, non-CDL commercial drivers, and anyone renewing or completing initial DOT medical certification.

02 — Your Visit

What to expect at your visit

Most DOT physicals are completed in about 30 minutes, and same-week appointments are usually available.

What to bring

A valid photo ID, a list of current medications, and any corrective lenses or hearing aids you normally use while driving.

The exam itself

A straightforward exam covering vision, hearing, blood pressure, urinalysis, and a general physical assessment.

Your certificate

If you pass, you’ll receive your Medical Examiner’s Certificate before you leave, ready to submit as required.

How long is a DOT physical valid for?

Typically up to 24 months, though certain health conditions can result in a shorter certification period.

03 — Who Needs One

Situations that call for a DOT physical

A new driver’s first exam and a returning driver’s renewal both go through the same standard, though what’s needed to pass can look different for each.

CDL drivers

Required exams to maintain DOT medical certification.

Non-CDL commercial drivers

Qualifying exams for drivers who need DOT certification without a CDL.

Certificate renewals

Renewing an expiring medical certificate before it lapses.

New drivers

Completing initial DOT certification before hitting the road.

Employer-scheduled exams

Coordinated scheduling for employers with multiple drivers.

Post-condition re-certification

Re-testing after addressing a health item flagged at a prior exam.

04 — Safety

What can affect your certification

Certain conditions can affect your certification length or require additional documentation. If we identify something during your exam, we’ll explain exactly what’s needed to move forward.

Bring documentation if you have

  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Diabetes requiring insulin
  • A history of significant vision or hearing limitations
  • A cardiac condition requiring monitoring

Certification may be shortened if you have

  • Blood pressure that’s borderline but not disqualifying
  • A stable, monitored chronic condition
  • A vision or hearing result near the qualifying threshold

A standard exam is appropriate if

  • You have no significant chronic health conditions
  • You’re renewing a certificate with no new health changes
  • You’re completing your first DOT physical as a new driver
